Hydrant Inspection and Testing
It really doesn’t take much to keep a hydrant operating in peak condition but regular maintenance is required. NFPA 25 “Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems” is the standard that should be used for the periodic maintenance and testing of hydrants.
Regular hydrant testing is a significant component of any business, city or regional district water supply program. Water systems are constantly being impacted by improvements, deterioration, changes in usage, and even water district maintenance activities which may affect zone valve settings. As a result it is important and a legal requirement to annually test all fire hydrants to determine what their capabilities would be in an emergency.
In addition to determining flows, testing can uncover a number of mechanical problems from valves that don't operate properly to leaks and even pump damaging debris flowing from hydrants. It is imperative that we discover problems and get them repaired before the hydrant is needed in an emergency.
Flow test data also provides necessary field information so that water service planners, Safety Committees and Fire Departments can accurately estimate the capabilities of water mains.
BC Fire Safe Protection Services can provide fire hydrant inspection and water flow calculations. Please contact us to schedule an inspection.

Backflow Preventer Inspection and Testing
Backflow preventers are required by the BC Building Code to protect potable water sources from contamination. Similar to any other mechanical device, these devices are subject to failure. The BC Fire Code requires that any part of the water supply to a fire protection system, must be inspected, tested and flushed annually.
When the building owner or manager retains BC Fire Safe Protection Services our certified staff will perform all testing and repairs to backflow preventers in the building. BC Fire Safe Protection Services will ensure the following is performed:
- Accurate field tests
- All repairs are made to return the backflow assembly to service, as well as filling out appropriate reports documenting the serviceability.
- BC Fire Safe Protection Servicesprovides accurate, detailed documentation and certification for every device tested.
- If required will provide service and repair to systems to ensure compliant building protection is present.
- BC Fire Safe Protection Services only uses original manufacturer (OEM) replacement parts when repairing backflow preventers.
- Our technician is responsible for the accuracy of the tests. Certificates and documentation are only competed by the inspecting technician. Nothing is completed by proxy - ever.
- The technician is responsible to ensure that the backflow device is the acceptable minimum standard for the specified hazard and that no additional hazards have been installed in the downstream system.
- The customer is always informed of any back flow hazards that may be present and provided with suggested corrections.
